Kibera Pride Initiative

With photography by Eduardo Soteras Jalil

The Kibera Pride Initiative is a community-led organization based in Kibera, one of the largest informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya. The initiative aims to empower the residents of Kibera, particularly focusing on uplifting LGBTQ+ individuals who often face discrimination and marginalization in their community.

Through various programs and activities, Kibera Pride Initiative works to provide support, advocacy, and resources for LGBTQ+ individuals in Kibera. This includes offering safe spaces for dialogue and discussion, providing educational workshops on LGBTQ+ rights and health issues, and advocating for policies that promote equality and inclusion.

One of the key goals of the initiative is to challenge stereotypes and stigma surrounding LGBTQ+ individuals in Kibera and foster greater acceptance and understanding within the community. By empowering LGBTQ+ individuals to speak up and advocate for their rights, the Kibera Pride Initiative strives to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all residents of Kibera.

Go Fund Me Campaign
We are aiming to raise £6000 to cover Kibera Pride’s school fee and rent arrears. We are also founding a monthly sponsorship scheme to build a bright and stable future for these children.

For nearly a decade, Kibera Pride has been a safe haven to Nairobi’s most vulnerable children. Today due to the harsh realities of Kenya’s cost of living crisis, it faces closure, leaving a void in the community for children who have nowhere else to turn… follow this link to find out more.

Print Sale
In November 2023, Eduardo generously donated this print for the Bandas school charity fundraiser. Together with friend Wendy, Victoria also ran the Nairobi Half Marathon. 13 miles is nothing in comparison to the work Kibera Pride children’s home do every day for the children of Nairobi’s largest slum.

If you think you want to donate, the sooner the better please! Donations from close friends inspire more donations… if you’re on the fence, here’s a testimonial from the local police chief,

“As Police Chief, I have witnessed the incredible transformation that occurs when these vulnerable children find solace and support at Kibera Pride. Many arrive broken hearted, carrying deep emotional wounds, having experienced harsh realities of life in the slum. Kibera Pride offers holistic care, nurturing physical, emotional and psychological well-being, allowing them to rebuild their lives.” — Nehemiah Amwocha, Police Chief and Kibera Pride trustee

Brushes of Hope

Brushes of Hope is a charity located in France set up by Sarah Zaft and her son. Sarah and Victoria met in Arles Photography Festival 2023.

Brushes of Hope celebrates the creativity of talented, resilient, yet impoverished children living in Kibera Pride children’s home in Kibera, Nairobi, one of Africa’s largest slums. They showcase and sell their artwork, to help pay for their education and to supply them with art materials. They believe that you will be inspired by their art, and when you purchase an artwork, you will give them hope empowerment, and a connection with the outside world.
