And Now the People Know.

A collaborative photographic project made by Leticia Valverdes with the Munduruku people of Sawré Muybu in the Brazilian Amazon, now gathered into a publication.

Leticia returned to the village carrying printed portraits and landscapes, and offered them back to the community as material to work on. Using paint, urucum, earth, leaves, river water and fire, children, women and elders marked the photographs directly — red for blood, gold for mining, silver for mercury — bringing the reality of mercury contamination to the surface of the image.

VIKA designed a zine that brings those images, marks and statements together in print and carries the Munduruku message beyond the exhibition, and lasts.

Red for blood. Gold for mining. Silver for mercury.

And Now the People Know is a collaborative photographic project made by Leticia Valverdes with the Munduruku people of Sawré Muybu in the Brazilian Amazon.

This is the material language that runs through the work: colours standing for what the eye cannot see. The photographs of the community were painted, beaded and embellished by hand, marking the presence of illegal gold mining and the mercury it leaves behind in the rivers, the fish and the body.

The zine brings those images and their meanings together in print, carrying the Munduruku message beyond the exhibition.

It began with an invitation to make art together.

'And Now the People Know' is a collaborative photographic project made by Leticia Valverdes with the Munduruku people of Sawré Muybu in the Brazilian Amazon.

Around a single table, many hands worked the same images — pressing, painting and marking the photographs with paint, urucum, earth and river water. The work passed between generations, younger hands making marks and older ones stitching and embroidering, until each picture carried the touch of the whole community.

The zine brings that collective work together in print, carrying the Munduruku message beyond the exhibition.
