Experiencing stories through touch 🤲

Our illustrations can be augmented from fabrics, which is truly unique. By incorporating tactile feedback into our stories, we can extend the narrative beyond the printed page and into everyday life.

This multi-sensory approach to story-telling expands through the app, for example, a device will vibrate rather than sound to be more inclusive.

Together means stories are portable and inclusive. Signs and words can be easily accessed and enjoyed by families in many different situations.

By creating playful, comforting materials, we are the only publisher able to bring a truly tactile dimension to our books.

How do we record BSL signs?

To ensure our British Sign Language (BSL) signs are accurate, VIKA worked closely with the Deaf Studies Trust, Elmfield School for Deaf Children, and consultants @freelance_bslconsultancy and @vs1productions Productions. Together, they helped us ensure that our video represents BSL signs accurately and meaningfully. We’re honoured to have had the opportunity to collaborate with the Deaf community.

Too often projects about British Sign Language do not involved the Deaf community. ‘Where is the Bird?’ is a fully inclusive publication, opening up books to BSL whilst also introducing the hearing community to sign language, and hopefully inspiring them to learn more!

Why is video vital for sign language?

Sign language is a moving and expressive language. Static illustrations and printed words simply don't even come close to representing the language, which is why video recordings are profoundly important.

By embedding videos into our books, we can include an entire modal language that has previously been excluded from mainstream publishing.

VIKA worked closely with the Deaf Studies Trust, Elmfield School for Deaf Children, @vs1productions Productions, and @freelance_bslconsultancy Stewart-Taylor to create these videos.
