Recovering wild animal species should no longer be

Recovering wild animal species should no longer be considered a ‘nice to have’ but an essential part of securing the future resilience of our planet, and ourselves.

The decline in wild mammal populations, coupled with nearly exponential growth of human and our domesticated mammals, have led to dramatic losses in their share of total mammal biomass. Today only 4% of the Earth's biomass belongs to wild animals.

Five amazing animals!

🌲 Lynx: This medium-sized cat is crucial for managing deer populations and promoting forest health.

🐝 Bees are the powerhouse of pollination, with wild native bees valued at $4 billion and honey bees contributing an additional $20 billion, making them essential for our ecosystem and agriculture.

🐚 Oysters: More than just a delicacy, oysters are vital ecosystem engineers. They create reefs that provide habitat for many marine species and help stabilise sediments, protecting shorelines from erosion.

🐟 Pacific Salmon migrate from ocean to freshwater to spawn, bringing vital nutrients to forested rivers and supporting the health of temperate ecosystems along the Pacific coast.

🦅 Found in tropical and subtropical regions, hornbills are key for rainforest regeneration. They disperse seeds and aid in plant growth, helping maintain forest biodiversity.

These animals highlight the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the essential roles species play in sustaining ecological balance.
