Without nature’s technicians, the balance in Arctic Ocean ecosystems could unravel.

For instance, without predator groundfish, grazers like urchins might decimate kelp forests and eelgrass meadows, leading to significant ecosystem disruption. The loss of key species such as seabirds, walrus, fish, and whales—vital nutrient carriers—could drastically reduce primary productivity both in the sea and on land. This could even trigger a negative feedback loop, similar to the iron deficiencies observed in the Southern Ocean.

Over the past forty years, Arctic temperatures have surged nearly four times faster than the global average, shrinking the suitable habitats for cold-adapted, ice-dependent species. With nowhere to shift further north, many species, including commercially important Arctic fish, are facing unprecedented challenges.

Wild animals play irreplaceable roles in providing ecosystem services for humanity. It's not just about their existence; *abundance is key*—populations need to be large enough to function properly.

Conservation should always be the priority, as it’s usually cheaper and more effective than trying to recover dwindling populations. Species recovery can lead to fast, positive results.

Conservation actions must also be planned and managed carefully. Even when the overall impact is positive, there may be a minority of people who face losses, and those trade-offs must be acknowledged.

Wild animals do so much more than keep ecosystems

Wild animals do so much more than keep ecosystems in balance—they play a huge role in our mental and physical well-being. Just watching wildlife or knowing certain species exist can boost mental health, spark creativity, and even inspire awe.

Birds are a great example. Their songs are linked to reduced anxiety, and birdwatching has become a major pastime. In Colombia, where bird biodiversity is the highest in the world, birdwatching brings in millions and creates thousands of jobs each year. Birds have inspired everything from ancient Aztec traditions with the sacred Quetzal to modern songs like The Beatles' 'Blackbird.'

Wildlife is more than just part of the natural world—it’s woven into our lives, cultures, and identities.

As #COP16Colombia approaches, it’s crucial that leaders #ActForOurPlanet. Our future depends on it. #WWFUntangled
