This striking portrait by Berlin-based photographer @teryoshi is from his project Grand Hotel Parr commissioned by @the_photobookmuseum.

It features the postcard set from the book Remote Scottish Postboxes by Martin Parr — a publication I had the privilege to design. The boxset is conceived around the design of a post box, complete with a front slit for posting cards! 📮

Teryoshin is known for his sharp, ethical approach to documentary photography, with projects like Nothing Personal, Animal Escape Plan and This Land Is My Land. Here, his playful vision connects with Parr’s work in a delightful way.

This is the only image of the box from this series and it's the cover image for much of the project. Looks like Teryoshin nailed it first time!

It feels serendipitous today with @martinparrstudio at the @martinparrfdn in Bristol, Nikita Teryoshin in Berlin, the Photobook Museum in Cologne,and @vikabooks currently in São Paulo that photography, and the books that hold it, does indeed travel across borders and bring people together.

🌟 This is @vikabooks on our @bop_bristol take over and wishing you all a very happy WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY! 🤸‍♀️

For those new to us, VIKA work with photographers and publishers, from emerging voices to internationally recognised names to design and produce photobooks at every stage of their journey, from prototypes and dummies to finished publications.

Our work ranges from photo-editorial and archive curation to publication design, print production, press-passing and publishing. We love telling visual stories and we are proud to have worked alongside some of the very best!

Each book is a conversation between the photographer, the designer, and the reader. We start with a vision and understanding, and together we turn that into a portable gallery and a legacy for audiences to enjoy for many years to come,

In this takeover, we’ve shared some of the incredible projects that will be part of this year’s BOP festival. Each book is at a different stage: some complete, some in progress, some looking for the right publisher. All are united by their desire to tell powerful stories using photography and the photobook.

@guybellinghamphotography and @vikabooks present The Extraordinary, a photobook that presents the incredible skills of today's circus performers through tintype portraits made with the Victorian wet plate collodion process.

Act II showcases sword swallowers, knife-throwers, whips, high-wire walkers and The Wheel of Death. These are feats of strength, discipline and bravery, captured into historic stillness of the tintype. Guy’s photographs reveal spectacle of each act as well as the intense focus, joy and bravery behind it.

Presented as a live performance, the book honours circus tradition through a process that is as physical as the acts themselves.

Guy Bellingham FRPS is a Bristol-based photographer working with tintype and early photographic processes. A former performer himself, his work often focuses on circus and theatre. He was awarded a Fellowship by the @royalphotographicsociety in 2020, and has received awards from the @britishphotographyawards (2021) and @internationalportraitphoto (2022).

Guy is seeking a publisher for this extraordinary body of work. The book dummy will be on display at the festival, so drop by the VIKA stand or get in contact for more information.
