Kibera Pride Initiative

A lifeline for Nairobi's vulnerable children

The Kibera Pride Initiative is a community-led organization based in Kibera, one of the largest informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya. The initiative aims to empower the residents of Kibera, particularly focusing on uplifting LGBTQ+ individuals who often face discrimination and marginalization in their community.

Through various programs and activities, Kibera Pride Initiative works to provide support, advocacy, and resources for LGBTQ+ individuals in Kibera. This includes offering safe spaces for dialogue and discussion, providing educational workshops on LGBTQ+ rights and health issues, and advocating for policies that promote equality and inclusion.

One of the key goals of the initiative is to challenge stereotypes and stigma surrounding LGBTQ+ individuals in Kibera and foster greater acceptance and understanding within the community. By empowering LGBTQ+ individuals to speak up and advocate for their rights, the Kibera Pride Initiative strives to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all residents of Kibera.

Empowering the Marginalized
The core mission of the Kibera Pride Initiative revolves around empowerment through tangible actions. This includes creating safe spaces for dialogue, conducting educational workshops on LGBTQ+ rights and health, and advocating for policies that foster inclusivity. The initiative aims to dismantle stereotypes and stigmas, fostering an environment of acceptance and understanding.

VIKA’s support
VIKA’s partnership with Kibera Pride, together with Wendy Elliott, Brad Elliot, SOMA, James Reeves, Eduardo Soteras Jalil, Gordwin Odhiambo and Sarah Zaft, has been instrumental in sustaining its operations. Through fundraising efforts such as the Go Fund Me campaign and the Print Sale event, VIKA has played a pivotal role in securing financial support for Kibera Pride’s essential needs, including school fees and rent arrears.

The Go Fund Me campaign, aimed at raising £6000, garnered significant attention and support, providing a crucial lifeline for Kibera Pride amidst financial uncertainties. Similarly, VIKA’s collaboration with Brushes of Hope — a charity set up by Sarah Zaft and her son after Victoria cycled past Sarah’s pop-up gallery at the Arles Photography Festival in 2023— underscores its commitment to leveraging art as a tool for empowerment and education within the Kibera community.

Facing Economic Realities
Kibera Pride’s existence is threatened by Kenya’s escalating cost-of-living crisis. Rising prices of essentials coupled with dwindling local donations have placed immense strain on the initiative’s sustainability. The current situation underscores the urgent need for continued support to ensure the welfare of Kibera Pride’s beneficiaries.

Your Support Matters
In light of these challenges, your support can make a tangible difference in the lives of Nairobi’s vulnerable children. Whether through one-time contributions or monthly sponsorships, every donation directly impacts Kibera Pride’s ability to provide holistic care and support to those in need.

  • “As Police Chief, I have witnessed the incredible transformation that occurs when these vulnerable children find solace and support at Kibera Pride. Many arrive broken hearted, carrying deep emotional wounds, having experienced harsh realities of life in the slum.
