The cover of The Silent Land is conceived from a s

The cover of The Silent Land is conceived from a single photograph, a spider’s web between two branches. The silver thread links loss and renewal and became the motif for the cover.

Printed on G.F. Smith’s Twist paper, its subtle woven texture recalls the forest floor: fibrous, organic, slightly uneven to the touch. The complementary blue evokes dusk in the woods, the moment light begins to fade but reflection begins. Silver foil in compostable silver.

The book takes its name from Christina Rossetti’s 1862 poem The Silent Land, written in contemplation of death and remembrance:

'I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain;
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.'

The title and the design share an awareness of absence, and of the delicate connections that remain.

Now featured in Deformed Surfaces: Uncovering Somerset Landscapes at Millfield School, @atkinsongallery (10 Sept – 10 Oct 2025), The Silent Land is given a dedicated section within a wider survey of Alexander’s two decades of work exploring Somerset landscapes.

The Silent Land will also be on display @bop_bristol next weekend. Printed and bound by @taylor_brothers.

📘 Jesse Alexander is a photographer, writer and educator @falmouthphotographyonline based in Somerset. He studied photography at Farnham and Newport, and is the author of Perspectives on Place: Theory & Practice in Landscape Photography. His work has been exhibited internationally and focuses on the intersections of landscape, memory and ecology.
